Final Project Proposal
AR 207
Name: Sue Ellen Carlson
Topic or Subject of your photo essay: Feeding my family
What is your thesis statement or angle that you are taking on the topic? Manger Mom feeds the family junk!
Mom's responsible for feeding the family. Four weeks of food for the family of Three.
I guess I will have a better idea for a thesis statement when I am done with the project.
How many photos do you envision having in your final project? 12-20 Depending on how much grocery shopping I do in the next 2 weeks.
Have you started photographing your subjects? IF so, what are you finding? That we eat alot of junk food. Maybe that is why I can't loose any weight. We also eat out alot and that can be pricey. I know that if I plan the meals based on what I already have I can save alot of money.
What format will you use to display your final project: handmade book, shutterfly, framed images, etc…
cork board/ chalk board. Not sure how to display the photos yet.

Photo Essay
http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1626519_1373664,00.html
After looking at some of the examples on your guys blogs, I surfed the web a little and found this link that I found VERY intresting. Compairing different Countries lifestyles and the foods they eat. The costs differ from Country to Country. In this day and age every penny counts and feeding the family can get expensive. In a class I took on "budgeting" I found that I tend to over spend on alot of different things, but the food budget was the most expensive ~ because we tend on eating out alot and buying alot of "junk" food. I found that if I plan the meals around what I already have and the sales at the grocery stores, I can save alot of money per week. Thought that testing my statagies might be intresting and educational to my self and others on how to budget "feeding the family".
Photo essay personal expieriment will start @ my next trip to the grocery store.

The start of WEEK 3 The fridge is getting pretty empty. I am trying to eat up what meats we already have. My grocery lists these past couple of weeks consits of alot of junk food. The big ticket items bought were before the start of this project. Meat is what is costly and is usually the main course. I have not been considering the costs for breakfasts, lunches, drinks ect. I spend during the work week. My daughter Shayla eats breakfast, lunch and snack Mon-Thurs and just breakfast on Fridays at school. Brian comes home for lunch and break and eats at home. I eat at home for lunch and breaks when I am working in Baraga. Lately I have been working in Zeba. I tend to eat lunch at the Pizza Shack alot and Holiday for coffee and breakfast. When I pack a lunch, I know I am saving a bundle of $$$$$$ so why don't I brown bag it more often? "Time" I have to make time to make a lunch for work. If I just get up about 5-10 minutes earlier I would eat more healthy and save money! Now thats smart!

REBECCA PARKER portrait photographer ~ midterm
Please let me introduce to you an inspirational Portrait Photographer. Rebecca Parker is a Digital Photographer and Photoshop Artist who is self taught.
Image choice can be found at this site:

This balanced portrait of a beautiful woman is kneeling in a meadow of flowers embracing the sunlight. My eye is drawn to the center of the photograph from the S-curve of the position of her arms. The sky, trees and mountain hills, the field of long grass and wild flowers break the photograph into the rule of thirds. Understanding that Rebecca uses a variety of unique digital art techniques, I question if the scenery could be created by her talent or if it was taken in the real world. The photograph is realistic enough for my eyes to believe there is such a place.
Admiring this portrait the story tells me that this bare chested woman is free spirited, sitting strong and confident. Seems to be at peace with her surroundings. Since I do not know much about this portrait as far as who she is or Rebecca's title to this master piece I will name it “Mother Nature.”
I am inspired that Rebecca is self taught, I discovered her surfing the web looking for a subject to complete my midterm. My interest in photography has grown since I began the class. I enjoy seeing the results of my work and sharing what I captured with friends and family. I have always been creative and loved art. I think I just may have found my median which is digital photography. At first I think nature interested me the most, but after seeing Rebecca's work, I see the possibilities.
I contacted Rebecca and asked her for a link to her photograph. She was totaly flattered that I loved her work and wanted to share her work as my midterm assignment.
I would like to quote her comments from the e-mail.
I took the image in Studio. I took about ten images of a model at the end of a shoot she was doing for another photographer who was doing something completely different with her.
I liked the image so much, I decided to make it more dramatic so I added a new field and sky to get the results you see.
My work is very organic and not forced. I never have any clear idea of what I want to acheive. I just see what happens.
Let me know if you have any more specific questions.

WELDERS FLASH
Brian is a Welder at Massie Manufacturing. Brian is about to make a joint weld with a Duel Shield .045 wire produced by 75% Co2 25% argon gas.
Brian enjoys welding because he makes alot of important fabucation. He is a hands on type of person and is a very dedicated hard worker.
The smoke, sparks and intense light created by the gases ignited is so powerful it is blinding.
The shadows cascading on the floor is so black and the rest of the room is as bright as if an atomic bomb exploted! The brightes picture is almost too brite, but that is what is so intresting about the photograph, it shows just how powerful the welder can be. It looks as if the picture is melting from the heat. And once he shut off the welder I was temporary blinded, now I understand why he complains about Welders Flash and see how his skin gets burned so easily.
I TEND TO GET CARRIED AWAY WITH HOW MANY PHOTOS TO CHOOSE FOR THE ASSIGNMENT, BUT I FIND QUALITIES IN MORE THAN THREE AND WANTED TO SHARE WHAT I CAPTURED BEHIND MY LENSE. :)
Portraiture
I choose black and white for this close up portrait of Brians face. I liked the shadow casted on the wall.
Home is where the heart is. This is my family and I am so proud of my beautiful JOY!
Close up of fater and daughter hands. Love is strong and so is our hearts.
